Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies that demand immediate attention are rare. However, it is always important that you call our office if you experience sudden discomfort or damage involving your orthodontic appliance. In most cases, we can advise you on how to temporarily solve the problem on your own until Dr. Kincer can see you. If it is necessary, we will schedule an emergency appointment to handle a more urgent orthodontic concern.

Urgent Care for Braces or Retainers

There are several types of orthodontic emergencies, some of which require a prompt trip to the office and others that can be solved at home. If you have suffered damage to your braces or lost your appliance, don’t wait to call us. We want to be sure your appliance gets repaired as quickly as possible so that your orthodontic treatment plan is not compromised.

Loose Bracket or Band
Whether you bit down on something too hard or suffered a bad fall, it is possible for your bracket or band to become loose or even pop off. If it is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and apply wax for comfort until you can be seen. If the bracket or band can be removed easily, store it safely and bring it to your next appointment.
Loose or Poking Wires
In many cases, you can use tweezers to gently put your wire back into place if it gets loose. If the wire is uncomfortable or poking the side of your cheek, you may place orthodontic wax on the area for comfort. If you are unable to put the wire back into position or resolve the discomfort, you may consider using small fingernail clippers to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened.
Sore Spots and Discomfort
Mouth sores are common when wearing braces. Some patients experience cheek or gum irritations immediately after getting braces while others may encounter sudden outbreaks of discomfort or have jaw soreness. In most scenarios, an over-the-counter topical anesthetic is all that is needed on the irritated soft tissues. However, you may use wax or take an acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers for general discomfort.
Lost or Broken Appliance
Call us immediately if you have lost your retainer or your orthodontic appliance needs to be repaired. The only exclusion is if you lose a separator, as this is common and does not require urgent action. Be sure to bring the remains or broken pieces of your appliance with you to your appointment.

At the office of Dr. William R. Kincer, we do our best to minimize orthodontic emergencies. However, we understand that they do happen, and you can always call our office for prompt advice and attention. Not only do we want our patients to stay out of discomfort, but we also want to make sure that their treatment plan stays on track.

If you or your child is experiencing an orthodontic emergency, please contact our Marietta office sooner rather than later. We are here to help you with all types of orthodontic-related traumas, whether minor or severe.

  • We are beyond thankful for Dr. Kincer and his team!! Dr. Kincer is one of the most honest and conservative Orthodontist, which is a VERY rare find in the industry. We moved to south Florida about halfway through our treatment of 18 months and did not switch orthodontists; that’s how much Dr. Kincer means to us! Our daughter’s smile is absolutely beautiful!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the BEST at what he does!!! Both of my girls have been under Dr. Kincer's care, with exceptional results. They both began treatment at age 8, because of their tiny mouths that required Phase I and Phase II treatments. As a result of his recommended treatment plan, our girls will have exceptional teeth for life. Our family is incredibly thankful for Dr. Kincer's meticulous care that resulted in BEAUTIFUL smiles!!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the best. I am almost a year into my treatment and i have nothing but great things to say. He is so kind and his team is amazing. They are simply amazing and truly care for what their customers need and what their teeth need. I highly recommend Doctor Kincer to anyone looking for orthodontics.

  • Excellent orthodontist. Invisalign was the best money I ever spent on myself. Dr. Kincer is meticulous, thorough, has attention to detail, and fixed my flared teeth. Everyone is always complimenting my smile. He is always timely, professional, and his support staff (Jennifer and Lynn) are really caring. He is able to shave down teeth to make them aesthetically fit my smile and proportions. Dr. Kincer and Lynn really make sure their patients are comfortable-- especially when it comes down to removing attachments for invisalign and IPR, when your teeth are already sensitive. I recommended him to my brother and little cousin for orthodontic work and for their retainers :)
