Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontics is not restricted to simply straightening crooked teeth. In fact, there are a wide range of orthodontic problems that patients can encounter. Certain misalignments between the top and bottom jaw can cause a poor bite, which can lead to speech problems, jaw pain and other disruptions if they are not treated in a timely manner. In short, orthodontic issues can affect your health and quality of life just as much as the aesthetics of your smile.

At the office of Dr. William R. Kincer, we are equipped to treat all types of orthodontic problems in children, teens and adults. We adhere to a personalized approach using the most proven orthodontic treatment methods available. Whether it is a severe overbite in a child or a minor tooth gap in an adult, Dr. Kincer takes the time to develop a strategic treatment plan to help you meet your orthodontic goals in the most comfortable and efficient way.

Our Marietta office proudly treats patients who have the following common orthodontic problems:

Overbite
This occurs when the upper front teeth extend or protrude over the lower front teeth. This can be severe enough to cause the lower teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth. Discomfort, bone damage and abnormal tooth wear can develop if not corrected by an orthodontist.
Underbite (or Lower Jaw Protrusion)
If a patient has a longer lower jaw, the lower front teeth may rest in front of the upper front teeth. Unfortunately, the patient becomes at high risk for decay, increased wear, gum disease, jaw pain and speech disturbances.
Protruding Upper Teeth (or Overjet)
An “overjet” occurs when the upper teeth extend too far forward or lower teeth don’t protrude far enough. This results in a poor molar bite and early wear and tear on the teeth. This type of orthodontic problem often develops from habits like thumb sucking and tongue thrusting.
Open Bite
If the upper and lower incisor teeth do not touch when you bite down, you may face the consequences of an open bite. This can include excessive wear on the back teeth as well as decreased chewing efficiency.
Crossbite
In most cases, the upper teeth bite toward the tongue inside the lower teeth. Patients often experience chewing difficulties and even misaligned jaw growth and tooth stratification.
Crowding
Just like its name, this type of orthodontic problem involves teeth that are misaligned or crooked due to lack of space. While crowding can certainly be a threat to your appearance, it also results in a higher risk of decay since the teeth are more difficult to clean. In severe cases, bone loss and gum recession may be apparent.
Spacing
Spacing concerns develop when there is too much space between the teeth and sometimes from teeth that are missing. While the frequency of food getting lodged in the tooth gaps is a common complaint, most patients seek orthodontic correction for cosmetic improvement.

No two smiles are alike. Each patient we treat has a unique set of orthodontic concerns. You can trust that we will carefully explain your misalignment or malocclusion and help you make an informed decision about your orthodontic treatment plan. It is important to us that patients take an active role in their orthodontic journey, as this can greatly contribute to more rewarding results.

  • We are beyond thankful for Dr. Kincer and his team!! Dr. Kincer is one of the most honest and conservative Orthodontist, which is a VERY rare find in the industry. We moved to south Florida about halfway through our treatment of 18 months and did not switch orthodontists; that’s how much Dr. Kincer means to us! Our daughter’s smile is absolutely beautiful!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the BEST at what he does!!! Both of my girls have been under Dr. Kincer's care, with exceptional results. They both began treatment at age 8, because of their tiny mouths that required Phase I and Phase II treatments. As a result of his recommended treatment plan, our girls will have exceptional teeth for life. Our family is incredibly thankful for Dr. Kincer's meticulous care that resulted in BEAUTIFUL smiles!!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the best. I am almost a year into my treatment and i have nothing but great things to say. He is so kind and his team is amazing. They are simply amazing and truly care for what their customers need and what their teeth need. I highly recommend Doctor Kincer to anyone looking for orthodontics.

  • Excellent orthodontist. Invisalign was the best money I ever spent on myself. Dr. Kincer is meticulous, thorough, has attention to detail, and fixed my flared teeth. Everyone is always complimenting my smile. He is always timely, professional, and his support staff (Jennifer and Lynn) are really caring. He is able to shave down teeth to make them aesthetically fit my smile and proportions. Dr. Kincer and Lynn really make sure their patients are comfortable-- especially when it comes down to removing attachments for invisalign and IPR, when your teeth are already sensitive. I recommended him to my brother and little cousin for orthodontic work and for their retainers :)
